About
me

Maria

I was born in Denmark in 1985, and traveled a lot around Europe growing up. But it wasn’t until September 26, 2006 that I boarded a plane and traveled to the USA for the first time. My visit to New York was life-changing – I knew that one day I would make it my home! It took 13 trips, an internship in 2010, and a two-year education in tourism and hospitality in Denmark before I finally moved to Queens, NY in July 2011.

I came as an International Student (F-1 visa) and I studied at the City University of New York – New York College of Technology (CUNY City Tech), earned a Bachelor in Hospitality Management and Tourism Entrepreneurship (as a part of the CUNY BA program), and graduated magna cum laude in 2015.

During my years as a tourist and as a student, I developed a website/blog with tips and tricks for Danish tourists coming to NYC. Eventually it grew into the business ‘Turist i New York’.

In May 2018, I decided to make a big move cross-country to another major tourism destination in the USA: Las Vegas. It wasn’t necessarily an easy decision and after the pandemic hit I realized it was time to go “back home” to New York City.

In New York I offer guide services as well as online concierge services.

My goal is to make sure travelers get the best experience while traveling to New York City.  I do that by working closely with the best of the best – and I bring the best offers to you.

I am also a mother of two and love traveling with my small children. You can read about our adventures on the blog and on social media.

Can’t wait to show you how awesome New York can be!

About the website

[The] Danish Tour Guide | USA is an expansion and a combination of my  Sightseeing and travel service company (‘Turist i New York’) that I began in 2010 i New York, and the English version that I started building in 2015 while a part of the CUNY Entrepreneurship Incubator. Lastly, my travel blog from over the years  has been added to the mix.

The reason behind the name, Danish Tour Guide, is because that’s what people call me. I thought it would make sense because anywhere I go I’m a tour guide even when I’m traveling privately, I see the destination through a tour guide’s eyes. I’m also a licensed tour guide in Washington D.C. and who knows where life will take me so here you have it: danishtourguide.com – a combination of my profession and my passion.

The website is not going to be in Danish. – So why even use the word ‘Danish?’ Not only does it hopefully intrigue you to to find out more about it – it also stands for the level of quality, integrity, and ‘hygge’ you experience whether it be by sightseeing, by travel services, or even just by following along on social media and the articles you’ll find on the website – eventually.

So welcome to [the] Danish Tour Guide – a platform for travel services, sightseeing, travel articles, and inspiration from the United States of America.

What to expect

tour group in NYC

You’ll find a focus on New York on the website and on our social media accounts. But it won’t just be New York. Having lived two years in Las Vegas and worked as a tour director on both the East and West Coast you’ll find a vast variety of information here.

If you’re Danish and if you’re looking for the Danish website about New York, then go here: www.turistinewyork.dk

My goal is to provide you with travel inspiration, an online concierge platform where you can rely on the advice you get and where the services we sell are based on personal experience and recommendation and not just automatic ‘like the rest of them’!

Sightseeing is undoubtedly also a huge part of the business. Whether or not you want a guide speaking Danish, English, or a different language I can make sure it happens – I only work with the best from our industry so if I get you a guide; you’ll like the guide!
